How to Set Your Material Purchase Goals

Posted by in Career Advice

If you are like most people, you like to spend money. I know I like to buy things. When my expendable income started to rise, one of the first things I wanted to purchase was a really nice automobile. When I accomplished this goal, I felt a sense of true satisfaction. I had set a goal and I actually reached it. Now I was ready for something else. The next thing I set my sights on was to get a mortgage to buy my first house. Each time as I accomplished a goal, I really felt a sense of satisfaction, knowing I was able to select and later purchase these material objects.

Goal Setting
To get the process started of setting and reaching your material goals, take out a sheet of paper or open up a blank page on your computer and start writing down all of the things you would like to buy. Some of these items you might include are things like: a new car, a new home or condo, exercise equipment, a new kitchen table and chairs, a new high definition television, power tools, books, clothes, shoes, and anything else your heart desires.

Use Post it Notes
Select the first item on your list that you want to purchase and write it down on a 3x5 post it note. Next to it write the target date for making this purchase. Place the post it note on your bathroom mirror. Each day as you look at it, it will reinforce the act of achieving this goal. Once you have accumulated enough money go out and make that purchase.

Make Plans
One of the most powerful elements to this exercise is that it gives you the opportunity to start making plans to achieve these material purchase goals. Half the fun in owning these things is the anticipation that comes as you work towards making them a reality.
