A key element of the job search is narrowing your search to find the best opportunities. Many candidates opt to use a job recruiter to boost their efforts. However, finding a professional who has your best interests and career goals in mind is essential. Ask questions and investigate the recruiter to determine if he meets your needs. If your recruiter can't answer the following questions, it may be time to expand your search.

When Can We Discuss My Career Goals?

If a job recruiter is hesitant to set up a time to meet with you or schedule a time for a conference call, he might be too busy with other clients or not as eager as you need him to be. You should be in close contact with your job recruiter throughout the job search process. A good recruiter makes sure you hear from him often regarding leads and other information related to your job search.

Do You Have Testimonials?

A qualified job recruiter is able and willing to share his success stories. This information is usually readily available to potential clients and is often used for marketing purposes. Before you enlist the help of a job recruiter, ask to see proof of his recent placements, or request to view testimonials from recent clients to determine if he is qualified to place you in a position or secure interviews with employers within your industry.

What Is the Salary Range for This Position?

Your job recruiter should know all about the position before sending you the lead. He should know the job description, potential duties, qualifications and salary range. If your job recruiter is hesitant to discuss salary or doesn't know the salary for the position, he probably did not request the information on your behalf. You should know the salary range for each position presented to you, as this information helps you decide if you want to spend time preparing for the job interview. If your recruiter continuously fails to obtain this information, consider enlisting the help of a different career professional.

Can You Give Me Feedback on My Resume?

Recruiters should be interested and eager to help you advance your career. A polished, professional resume is often the key factor in determining whether or not you receive an interview request. Job recruiters who decline your request to review your resume do not have your best interests at heart.

When enlisting the help of a career professional to simplify and expand your job search efforts, thoroughly vet the individual to determine if the two of you are in sync. A job recruiter should spend time getting to know more about you, your career goals and your qualifications to better aid you in finding a full-time position.
