Three Ways to Stop Living Your Life in the Fast Lane

Posted by in Career Advice

Have ever noticed how some people are always in a hurry? They are always running here, running there and getting nowhere! They are in a hurry when they get up in the morning as they shower and shave or put on their makeup. If they have time, they gulp down their breakfast. Worse yet, they grab their cup of coffee and dash out the door with their cell phone glued to their ear, as they drive to their job. In their commute to work, they have to get in the passing lane and drive a minimum of ten miles over the speed limit. If you make the mistake of driving in front of them, be prepared for the flashing of their headlights and the horn that occasionally accompanies it. As you pull your vehicle over to the right lane, and they pass you by, expect a scowl and a few obscenities that fortunately you cannot hear. As they make their way into the company parking lot, driver courtesy is not even a remote possibility. If they are heading towards a particular parking spot just as someone else is, they will not yield. Hey, they are in a hurry, and if someone else is in the way, well, that’s just tough. This type of person who is in a hurry doesn’t know any better. Like a passenger peering out the window at the railroad tracks on a speeding Japanese bullet train, better known as the Shinkansen, life is a blur. He is blind to the fact that he is rushing through life, and missing the best parts of it. Here are three suggestions for getting out of the fast lane and really living your life more deliberately and fully. First, start going to bed a little earlier each night. By going to bed earlier, you will be able to get a fuller night’s sleep and get up earlier. This will help you to have more time in the morning and prevent rushing to get to work. The next thing you can do is to schedule quality time with your spouse or significant other, so you can begin to really enjoy each other’s company. This leisurely time should be spent eating dinner together or having a cup of tea. This type of time spent will allow you to get reacquainted with each other and foster better communication. Finally, make it a point to schedule free time for yourself. Use this time to develop your hobbies or special interests. Treat yourself to a day where you can get outside and take a leisurely walk through your neighborhood or nearby park. Schedule it so you can watch a spectacular sunrise or sunset. By making it a priority to take the time to slow down and deliberately live your life, you will learn to appreciate it even more than ever. Tom Borg is president of Tom Borg Consulting, LLC.
