Modern advances in technology allow companies to interview potential employees from across the country via video interview. This can take place through live video chat or recorded video segments in which interviewees answer a series of questions. Unfortunately, this convenient interview format has left many job seekers clueless about how to proceed. Learn a few of the key tips for acing a video interview so you can score the job of your dreams.

1. Dress the Part

Just like in traditional interviews, appearance matters. Everything, from how you dress to your video background, has a significant impact on how interviewers perceive you. Wear solid colors to avoid distractions, steering clear of white shirts or stripes that can create the illusion of movement. Wear anti-shine makeup to avoid the appearance of a sweaty face, which can portray nervousness or insecurity. For hairstyle and clothing, err on the side of formal. Keep hair out of your face, and avoid any styles that might distract your viewer during the video interview.

2. Choose a Suitable Location

Find a setting to hold your video interview that gives off an air of professionalism. A plain white background is often best. Choose a room with bright lighting from several sources, setting up a lamp behind you to eliminate shadows, if needed.

3. Use the Right Equipment

Another key interview preparation tip is to choose a top-quality HD camera that produces a sharp picture, avoiding your computer's built-in camera if possible. Position the camera to the height of your head to keep your posture at its best. Remember that your head and shoulders should be the only parts of you that show up in the video frame.

4. Practice First

Before the video interview, do a test run with the outfit, background and camera you plan to use to make sure everything looks good on screen. Don't forget to test the sound quality from your microphone during interview preparation, as it's your chief method of getting your ideas across to the interviewer. If you are requested to use a specific platform for the interview, ensure you are familiar with all the controls before you get started. If you're using a popular video chat platform, such as Skype, ensure your username is professional in order to make a positive impression. If needed, create a new account just for the interview.

5. Make a Great First Impression

During the video interview itself, speak loudly and clearly, maintaining an even tone. Remember to maintain eye contact with the camera rather than the eyes of the interviewer on your screen. If you wear glasses, consider using an anti-glare coating. Finally, relax and do your best to appear prepared and confident.

A video interview may seem more casual and laid-back than a traditional interview, but keep in mind that the same rules apply when it comes to making an impression on the interviewer. Practice your answers beforehand, and never go in unprepared.
