What Do You Think About Your Boss?

What employees really think about their boss.

It's always in fashion to dislike your boss, and it seems that it is becoming even more so. With so many people out of work and looking for jobs, the lucky ones who still have a job to go to are being asked to take on more work and more responsibility and even receiving less pay for their trouble. For those people, boss-bashing has reached epic proportions.

In fact, a recent survey by a staffing consulting company, OfficeTeam, showed that almost half of the workers they polled said that their boss was completely unreasonable. When asked why they planned to do about their difficult boss, here is what they said:

  • 35% - Said they will stay put and try to deal with the issues.
  • 27% - Plan to quit once they line up a new job
  • 24% - Will stay put and suffer through the torment
  • 11% - Plan to quit immediately

These are some frightening numbers. So, what is it about these peoples' bosses that have them so upset?

When asked about the negative qualities of their bosses, the people surveyed placed their supervisor in one of these categories:

  • Micromangers – These bosses have challenges when it comes to delegating responsibilities. They tend to look over their employees' shoulders and make sure that everything is done exactly as they asked.

  • Poor communicators – Supervisors who provide little or no direction fall into this category. Because deadlines and goals aren't being explained thoroughly, jobs end up being rushed and may have to be re-done several times.

  • Bullies – Bosses who are bullies are gruff with their employees and are quick to become frustrated. They want things done their way and don't like to hear criticism or input from their employees.

  • Saboteurs – These bosses rarely praise their employees and often takes the credit for the accomplishments of their team. When they fail to achieve results, the sabotaging boss will blame the team and not accept any responsibility. Additionally, employees complain that this type of boss often undermines their efforts and wants to see them fail.

Do any of these sound like people you have worked for in the past? I know I recognize a few. Although there are many great bosses out there, this article isn't about them. If you have a boss that you think should be on this list, I would love to hear your stories in the comment section.
