As part of the Marketing & Communication business unit, members of the Public Affairs and Public Relations teams play an important role in communicating the company's policies and actions to the news media and supporting efforts to communicate with a variety of stakeholders.

The Senior Communications Specialist-Public Affairs is part of a team responsible for initiating, directing and executing programs to accurately and effectively communicate the company's policies and actions and providing timely emergency communications to ensure the health and welfare of the public. Job responsibilities include:

Strategic Communications
* Developing communication plans for state and local public affairs matters in coordination with stakeholder-facing business units, such as government relations teams, to ensure effective, consistent communication, both proactively and reactively
* Conducting media training and counseling executives and subject matter experts to ensure consistency and accuracy of external communication
* Writing, editing and/or guiding the development of appropriate materials, such as op-eds, backgrounders, position statements, issues papers, news releases, etc. to help the media and the public understand the company's policies and actions
* Integrating public affairs programs with interactive and social media outreach
* Managing community and media events with extreme attention to detail

Media Relations & Emergency Communications
* Serving as a spokesperson for the company as a member of a 24-hour information bureau
* Responding to inquiries from and developing relationships with electronic and print media
* Developing programs for interaction with news editors and producers to promote awareness and understanding of the company's actions and positions
* Assisting in leading and directing crisis communications both internally and externally
Qualifications
The position requires a seasoned communications professional with five or more years of experience in communications, government relations or related fields.

Required:
* Bachelor's degree, preferably in a relevant field
* Excellent communication and analytical skills
* Extremely strong writing, editing and research skills - expected to demonstrate expertise through writing and editing assessments
* Must be willing to work extended hours when needed
* Expertise in the development and disciplined execution of strategic communication plans and in the use of research and audience insight to develop appropriate messaging
* Strong dedication to customer service
* A talent for creative thinking and problem-solving
* Ability to multi-task and maintain high performance under pressure in dynamic, fast-paced environment
* Ability to follow critical business processes while remaining flexible and adaptable

Preferred:
* Comfort with financial/statistical data
* Knowledge of legislative, regulatory and/or political processes
* On-the-record spokesperson experience
